There are two main reasons why Vigan, also known as the Heritage City is so fascinating to visit. First, it is the only UNESCO World Heritage City in the Philippines. And second, it was officially declared as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities last December of 2014. I felt so proud!
My hubby and I had gone to Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte but skipped setting foot in Vigan City. This Holy Week of 2015, he enjoined me to visit Ilocos Province again and now with our two kids. Vigan is our top priority, to see and feel its old-world charm. He also enjoined our Coron travel buddies, Froi, Marie, and little Alvin, the kaladkarin family. Haha!
We left Alabang around 11:00 p.m. We reached Normi2s Beach Resort in San Fernando, La Union at 5:00 a.m. to confirm our stay this coming Saturday. We had our breakfast in Jollibee in Candon town around 6:00 am.
After almost two hours, we went to our first destination in Baluarte (or fortress) in Brgy. Salindeg. It is owned by Governor Chavit Singson and one of the top tourist attractions in Vigan. One good thing in visiting this mini zoo is that it has no entrance fee. It is free for everyone to see a variety of animals like ostrich, tigers, giraffes, horses, parrots, snakes, other animals from other countries, and others from our local species.
It has a butterfly garden, a chapel, a shooting range, a souvenir stall, a horse riding track, and the Safari Gallery. Thanks to Governor Chavit for bringing people closer to animals.
Outside the mini zoo are souvenir stores in which we bought t-shirts (P190-P230), key chains (P35), ref magnet (P50), and other souvenir items.
We left Baluarte at 11:00 am and headed to Abuelita’s Restaurant (which means little lola according to the staff). It gave me the initial thrill as we passed by the old historic houses to where the original facade was preserved. Indeed, we are now embracing the highlight of Vigan. But before I get too excited, we have to eat first. We took a long table and ordered Vigan Longganisa (P100-4 pieces), Dinuguan (P60), Bistek (P70), 5 plain rice (P75), and one large sprite (P30) for a total of P475 only.
Froi and family had separate order. While waiting for the food to be served, we were engrossed staring at the old furniture like sewing machines, electric fans, jars, radio, and even plate numbers displayed on the wall.
Comment – nice food, good service.

It was twelve high noon and our shades can’t stand the heat of the blistering sun. We headed to Mojica Residencia Hotel to where we will stay for the night. Parking was small as it will accommodate four cars only. Good thing they have a much wider parking space few distances away from the hotel. We unloaded our stuff and waited in the lobby for our check-in time.
It was peak season and what we got was the last air-conditioned Barkadahan Room, good for six to eight persons. It has six beds, an LCD tv, two wall fans, and two common bathrooms. Rate – P2,900, no breakfast.
I’m so excited to walk in the famous Calle Crisologo. We will travel back to the 19th century. But we have to take a nap for few hours so we can have the energy we need.
Rest Mode…
Next Destination: Calle Crisologo.
